Abstract

The study examined the determinants of immunisation uptake among children under five in Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State. A descriptive survey research design was used. The study was guided by four objectives and four corresponding research questions. The calculated sample size was 370 mothers and caregivers from a population of 5,000, with 37 respondents added for attrition, giving 407 respondents. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The instrument was tested for reliability using the test-retest method, and a Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient of 0.85 was obtained, indicating acceptable reliability. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages. The findings showed that the largest age groups were respondents aged 26-35 years and 36-45 years, representing 24.6% and 22.1%, respectively. Respondents aged 18-25 years accounted for 19.7%, while those aged 46-55 years and 56 years and above accounted for 17.2% and 16.5%, respectively. The respondents were mostly male (46.7%), followed by female respondents (44.2%). The study found that 55.28% of respondents reported that their children had received all recommended vaccinations according to the national immunisation schedule, whereas 36.12% disagreed. In addition, 51.85% agreed that they could easily access immunisation services, while 39.07% disagreed. Financial constraints, income level and work schedules were identified as barriers to timely immunisation. The study concluded that, although immunisation coverage showed positive trends, important barriers remained.
